ABBA

9 albums with 93 songs. 17 other songs. A total of 110 songs.

1973 Ring Ring (12)

ABBA's debut album. Ten good songs: "Ring Ring", "Another Town Another Train", "Nina Pretty Ballerina", "Rock'n Roll Band", "Love Isn't Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough)", "Me And Bobby And Bobby's Brother", "People Need Love", "She's My Kind Of Girl", "He Is Your Brother" and "I Am Just A Girl". And two disappointments: "Disillusion" and "I Saw It In The Mirror". "She's My Kind Of Girl" was first recorded for the film "The Seduction Of Inga" (1971). Written by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, this song would eventually become their breakthrough hit when it was released in Japan to great success, prompting them to form their own band. And it was included in the international version of the "Ring Ring" album.

1974 Waterloo (11)

Four marvellous classic ABBA hits: "Waterloo", "Honey Honey", "Dance (While The Music Still Goes On)" and "Hasta Manana". Three fine songs: "Sitting In The Palmtree", "My Mama Said" and "What About Livingstone". Four weak tracks: "Suzy-Hang-Around", "Watch Out", "King Kong Song" and "Gonna Sing You My Lovesong".

1975 ABBA (11)

One of ABBA's greatest albums. Seven superb hits: "Mamma Mia", "I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do", "Bang-A-Boomerang", "SOS", "So Long", "Rock Me" and "Tropical Loveland". And four disappointments: "Hey Hey Helen", "Man In The Middle", "Intermezzo No 1" and "I've Been Waiting For You".

1976 Arrival (11)

Probably ABBA's second greatest album. Four fabulous hits: "Dancing Queen", "Money Money Money", "Fernando" and "Knowing Me Knowing You". And seven fine tracks: "My Love My Life", "When I Kissed The Teacher", "Dum Dum Diddle", "Why Did It Have To Be Me?", "Tiger", "That's Me" and "Arrival". "Fernando", first released as single a year earlier in 1975, was only included on the records sold in Australia and New Zealand.

1977 ABBA: The Album (9)

Nine fine songs: "Thank You For The Music", "Eagle", "Take A Chance On Me", "I Wonder (Departure)", "The Name Of The Game", "Move On", "One Man One Woman", "Hole In Your Soul" and "I'M A Marionette".

1979 Voulez-Vous (10)

Four excellent tunes: "Angeleyes", "Chiquitita", "Voulez-Vous" and "Kisses Of Fire". And six fine songs: "I Have A Dream", "As Good As New", "If It Wasn't For The Nights", "Lovers (Live A Little Longer)", "Does Your Mother Know" and "The King Has Lost His Crown".

1980 Super Trouper (10)

ABBA's greatest album. Seven magnificent masterpieces: "Super Trouper", "Happy New Year", "Andante Andante", "On And On And On", "Our Last Summer", "Me And I" and "Lay All Your Love On Me". And three fine songs: "The Way Old Friends Do", "The Winner Takes It All" and "The Piper".

1981 The Visitors (9)

Quite different from their previous albums. It's a more complex and mature effort, tackling more serious themes, and using a more sophisticated musical style. But not surprisingly, it has not been as successful as their previous records. And it would be ABBA's final album for 40 years. Nine fine songs: "One Of Us", "I Let The Music Speak", "Head Over Heels", "Two For The Price Of One", "The Visitors", "When All Is Said And Done", "Soldiers", "Slipping Through My Fingers" and "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room".

2021 Voyage (10)

After 40 years, ABBA has reunited for this superb album. Two masterpieces: "Don't Shut Me Down" and "Just A Notion". And eight very good songs: "No Doubt About It", "Keep An Eye On Dan", "I Still Have Faith In You", "When You Danced With Me", "Bumblebee", "I Can Be That Woman", "Little Things" and "Ode To Freedom". This is how Kate Mossman of the New Statesman has described the best song on the album, "Don't Shut Me Down": "Its opening has a West End feel, like Evita's tentative address to the masses, but then it whizzes with a 'Dancing Queen' mirrorball glissando into squelchy 1980s disco, giving the impression it's going to be straightforward. But then it mutates, and mutates into something wonderful and strange".

Electric Light Orchestra

1971 Electric Light Orchestra (9)

Very experimental, the Electric Light Orchestra's first album doesn't offer many hints of their more conventional musical glories to come. What it offers instead are two excellent compositions, "10538 Overture" and "Whisper In The Night", as well as seven atonal, but truly fascinating attempts to twist one's ear into a pretzel: "Nellie Takes Her Bow", "Look At Me Now", "The Battle Of Marston Moor (July 2nd 1644)", "First Movement (Jumping Biz)", "Mr Radio", "Manhattan Rumble (49th Street Massacre)" and "Queen Of The Hours".

1973 ELO 2 (4)

Three very impressive compositions: "Momma", "Kuiama" and "From The Sun To The World (Boogie No 1)". One brave attempt to compose a challenging experimental piece, "In Old England Town (Boogie No 2)". And "Roll Over Beethoven", a Chuck Berry cover song with actual Beethoven music mixed in for good measure.

1973 On The Third Day (8)

Electric Light Orchestra's first album without Roy Wood and it shows. Jeff Lynne is now firmly in charge and the most extreme and atonal experiments are out. But all the innovations of the progressive rock are still on. Eight excellent compositions: "Showdown", "Daybreaker", "Bluebird Is Dead", "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle", "Dreaming Of 4000", "Ocean Breakup / King Of The Universe", "Oh No Not Susan" and "New World Rising / Ocean Breakup (Reprise)". The album also covers Edvard Grieg's "In The Hall Of The Mountain King".

1974 Eldorado (8)

Electric Light Orchestra's first great concept album. One timeless classic: "Can't Get It Out Of My Head". And seven good tracks: "Poor Boy (The Greenwood)", "Boy Blue", "Nobody's Child", "Illusions in G Major", "Laredo Tornado", "Mister Kingdom" and "Overture / Eldorado / Finale".

1975 Face The Music (8)

The first Electric Light Orchestra's album to go platinum. Two timeless classics: "Evil Woman" and "Strange Magic". Three fine songs: "Waterfall", "One Summer Dream" and "Down Home Town". And three disappointments: "Poker", "Nightrider" and "Fire On High".

1976 A New World Record (9)

One of Electric Light Orchestra's greatest albums. Three timeless masterpieces: "Telephone Line" (probably their best song ever), "Livin' Thing" and "Do Ya". And six fine songs: "Shangri-La", "Rockaria", "Tightrope", "Mission (A World Record)", "So Fine" and "Above The Clouds". An earlier, far inferior version of "Do Ya" was first released as a single in 1972 by Jeff Lynne's old band The Move.

1977 Out Of The Blue (17)

This fabulous double album is Electric Light Orchestra's crowning achievement. Six timeless classics: "Mr Blue Sky", "Turn To Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Jungle", "Summer And Lightning" and "Sweet Is The Night". Eight good songs: "It's Over", "Night In The City", "Starlight", "Wild West Hero", "Across The Border", "Steppin' Out", "Big Wheels" and "Birmingham Blues". One weak song: "Standin' In The Rain". And two unimpressive instrumental tracks: "The Whale" and "Believe Me Now".

1979 Discovery (9)

Nicknamed "Disco Very". Two timeless classics: "Shine A Little Love" and "Don't Bring Me Down". Seven excellent songs: "Confusion", "Last Train To London", "Midnight Blue", "On The Run", "The Diary Of Horace Wimp", "Wishing" and "Need Her Love".

1980 Xanadu (5)

An uneven soundtrack album, divided evenly between Olivia Newton-John's five songs on Side One, and the Electric Light Orchestra's five compositions on Side Two. Except for "Magic", Olivia's songs are quite forgettable. Neither "Suddenly" nor "Dancin'" nor "Suspended In Time" or "Whenever You're Away From Me" have much to recommend them. But the Electric Light Orchestra's side of the album is better. One timeless classic: "Xanadu". Two very good songs: "I'M Alive" and "Don't Walk Away". And two fine tunes: "The Fall" and "All Over The World". It should be noted that although the film was a critical and commercial flop (only achieving a certain limited fame as a camp classic), the soundtrack album was a worldwide success and received positive reviews from music critics, earning double platinum certifications in the United States and Canada.

1981 Time (12)

Seven excellent songs: "Hold On Tight", "The Lights Go Down", "The Way Life's Meant To Be", "From The End Of The World", "Yours Truly 2095", "Twilight" and "21st Century Man". Three fine tunes: "Ticket To The Moon", "Here Is The News" and "Rain Is Falling". And two disappointments: "Another Heart Breaks" and "Prologue / Epilogue".

1983 Secret Messages (11)

Two excellent songs: "Rock 'n' Roll Is King" and "Bluebird". Seven good tunes: "Danger Ahead", "Train Of Gold", "Secret Messages", "Stranger", "Take Me On And On", "Time After Time" and "Four Little Diamonds". And two disappointments: "Loser Gone Wild" and "Letter From Spain".

1986 Balance Of Power (10)

Ten good songs: "Calling America", "Secret Lives", "Heaven Only Knows", "So Serious", "Getting To The Point", "Is It Alright", "Sorrow About To Fall", "Without Someone", "Endless Lies" and "Send It".

2001 Zoom (13)

Thirteen good songs: "Just For Love", "Easy Money", "It Really Doesn't Matter", "Alright", "Moment In Paradise", "State Of Mind", "Stranger On A Quiet Street", "In My Own Time", "Ordinary Dream", "A Long Time Gone", "Melting In The Sun", "All She Wanted" and "Lonesome Lullaby".

2015 Alone In The Universe (11)

Eleven good songs: "On My Mind", "One Step At A Time", "Love And Rain", "Dirty To The Bone", "When I Was A Boy", "When The Night Comes", "The Sun Will Shine On You", "Ain't It A Drag", "All My Life", "I'M Leaving You" and "Alone In The Universe".

2019 From Out Of Nowhere (10)

Ten good songs: "One More Time", "Sci-Fi Woman", "Time Of Our Life", "Goin' Out On Me", "From Out Of Nowhere", "Help Yourself", "All My Love", "Down Came The Rain", "Losing You" and "Songbird".

Leonard Cohen

15 albums with 140 songs.

1967 Songs Of Leonard Cohen (10)

Leonard Cohen's first album. Quite uneven. Four classic tunes: "So Long Marianne", "Suzanne", "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" and "Sisters Of Mercy". And six disappointments: "Master Song", "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong", "The Stranger Song", "Winter Lady", "Stories Of The Street" and "Teachers".

1969 Songs From A Room (9)

Five good songs: "Bird On The Wire", "A Bunch Of Lonesome Heroes", "Lady Midnight", "Tonight Will Be Fine" and "The Old Revolution". Four weak songs: "Seems So Long Ago Nancy", "You Know Who I Am", "Story Of Isaac" and "The Butcher". "The Partisan" is a cover song.

1971 Songs Of Love And Hate (8)

Two excellent songs: "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "Diamonds In The Mine". And six disappointments: "Joan Of Arc", "Avalanche", "Last Year's Man", "Sing Another Song Boys", "Love Calls You By Your Name" and "Dress Rehearsal Rag".

1974 New Skin For The Old Ceremony (11)

Two great classics: "Chelsea Hotel 2" and "Lover Lover Lover". Four good songs: "Is This What You Wanted", "Who By Fire", "Leaving Green Sleeves" and "There Is A War". And five weak tunes: "Field Commander Cohen", "Why Don't You Try", "Take This Longing", "A Singer Must Die" and "I Tried To Leave You".

1977 Death Of A Ladies' Man (8)

Very different from everything Leonard Cohen has ever done. The spectre of Phil Spector hangs all over it. Released to universal confusion and largely bad reviews, it has left many die-hard Cohen fans stunned and disappointed. In fact, it seems deliberately designed to scare the hell out of any fan of early Cohen. But it's still one of his best, and most original, albums. "Memories" is arguably Leonard Cohen's greatest song. And all the other tracks are fabulous as well: "Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On", "Death Of A Ladies' Man", "True Love Leaves No Traces", "Paper Thin Hotel", "Fingerprints", "Iodine" and "I Left A Woman Waiting".

1979 Recent Songs (9)

One of Leonard Cohen's weakest albums. One cover, "Un Canadien errant". And nine very disappointing songs: "The Guests", "Humbled In Love", "The Window", "The Gypsy's Wife", "Came So Far For Beauty", "Our Lady Of Solitude", "Ballad Of The Absent Mare", "The Traitor" and "The Smokey Life".

1984 Various Positions (9)

Two timeless classics: "Hallelujah" and "Dance Me To The End Of Love". And seven fine songs: "The Law", "Coming Back To You", "The Captain", "Night Comes On", "Hunter's Lullaby", "Heart With No Companion" and "If It Be Your Will".

1988 I'M Your Man (8)

Probably Leonard Cohen's greatest album. Eight memorable masterpieces: "I'M Your Man", "Everybody Knows", "Take This Waltz", "First We Take Manhattan", "Tower Of Song", "Ain't No Cure For Love", "I Can't Forget" and "Jazz Police".

1992 The Future (9)

Five great classics: "The Future", "Closing Time", "Democracy", "Anthem" and "Waiting For The Miracle". And four weak tracks: "Always", "Be For Real", "Light As The Breeze" and "Tacoma Trailer".

2001 Ten New Songs (10)

Nine good songs: "In My Secret Life", "A Thousand Kisses Deep", "That Don't Make It Junk", "Here It Is", "Love Itself", "By The Rivers Dark", "Boogie Street", "Alexandra Leaving" and "You Have Loved Enough". And only one disappointment: "The Land Of Plenty".

2004 Dear Heather (12)

An uneven album. Six good songs: "The Faith", "Morning Glory", "Nightingale", "Go No More A-Roving", "Dear Heather" and "Because Of". And six weak songs: "Villanelle For Our Time", "There For You", "The Letters", "Undertow", "On That Day" and "To A Teacher". "Tennessee Waltz" is a cover.

2012 Old Ideas (10)

Three nice songs: "Different Sides", "Going Home" and "Amen". And seven disappointments: "Lullaby", "Banjo", "Show Me The Place", "Darkness", "Anyhow", "Crazy To Love You" and "Come Healing".

2014 Popular Problems (9)

A very memorable album. One masterpiece, "Nevermind" (arguably Leonard Cohen's best song in more than two decades). Seven very good tunes: "Slow", "Almost Like The Blues", "Did I Ever Love You", "My Oh My", "A Street", "Born In Chains" and "You Got Me Singing". And only one weak track: "Samson In New Orleans".

2016 You Want It Darker (9)

Five good songs: "You Want It Darker", "Traveling Light", "On The Level", "If I Didn't Have Your Love" and "Steer Your Way". And four weak songs: "It Seemed The Better Way", "Leaving The Table", "Treaty" and "String Reprise / Treaty".

2019 Thanks For The Dance (9)

Two fine songs: "Puppets" and "The Hills". And seven disappointments: "It's Torn", "Moving On", "Thanks For The Dance", "Happens To The Heart", "The Night Of Santiago", "The Goal" and "Listen To The Hummingbird".
