Elton John

29 albums with 297 songs by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. 5 other songs. A total of 302 Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs. But that's only a part (albeit a major one) of Elton John's oeuvre. There are also songs he has written with Tim Rice (21), Gary Osborne (19), Tom Robinson (3), Caleb Quaye (2), Judie Tzuke (1) and James Newton Howard (1). As well as three solo songs by Elton John. Elton John's albums also include 8 original songs written by Pete Bellotte, Lesley Duncan and Caleb Quaye. A total of 360 songs.

1969 Empty Sky (13)

Elton John's first album. Quite uneven. Five fine songs: "Skyline Pigeon", "Val-Hala", "Gulliver / Hay Chewed / Reprise", "Hymn 2000" and "Lady What's Tomorrow". And four disappointing ones: "Western Ford Gateway", "The Scaffold", "Sails" and "Empty Sky". Later editions of the album include bonus tracks with four Elton John singles released in 1969: one fine tune ("Lady Samantha") and three weak ones ("All Across the Havens", "It's Me That You Need" and "Just Like Strange Rain").

1970 Elton John (12)

Two timeless classics: "Your Song" and "Border Song". Two excellent songs: "The Cage" and "Take Me To The Pilot". It's not entirely clear whether the song "No Shoe Strings On Louise" was intended as a homage to, or as a parody of, the Rolling Stones. But either way, it's quite good. But five songs are weak: "I Need You To Turn To", "The King Must Die", "The Greatest Discovery", "First Episode At Hienton" and "Sixty Years On". Later editions of the album include bonus tracks with two Elton John singles released in 1970: fine "Rock And Roll Madonna" and weak "Bad Side Of The Moon".

1970 Tumbleweed Connection (10)

A concept album based on country, western and Americana themes. Nine fine songs: "Come Down In Time", "Son Of Your Father", "Country Comfort", "My Father's Gun", "Amoreena", "Ballad Of A Well-Known Gun", "Burn Down The Mission", "Where To Now St Peter?" and "Talking Old Soldiers". The album also includes "Love Song", a fine track written by Lesley Duncan.

1971 Madman Across The Water (9)

One timeless classic: "Tiny Dancer". Three great songs: "Levon", "Madman Across The Water" and "All The Nasties". Five weak tunes: "Razor Face", "Holiday Inn", "Indian Sunset", "Rotten Peaches" and "Goodbye".

1972 Honky Chateau (10)

Two timeless classics: "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat". Seven good songs: "Salvation", "Hercules", "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters", "I Think I'M Going To Kill Myself", "Mellow" and "Slave". Two disappointments: "Amy" and "Susie (Dramas)".

1973 Don't Shoot Me I'M Only The Piano Player (10)

Two timeless classics: "Crocodile Rock" and "Daniel". And eight good songs: "Have Mercy On The Criminal", "I'M Gonna Be A Teenage Idol", "Elderberry Wine", "Midnight Creeper", "High Flying Bird", "Teacher I Need You", "Blues For My Baby And Me" and "Texan Love Song".

1973 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (17)

Elton John's greatest album. Five timeless classics: "Candle In The Wind", "Bennie And The Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". Five excellent songs: "Harmony", "Jamaica Jerk-Off", "All The Girls Love Alice", "Social Disease" and "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n Roll)". Three fine tracks: "Dirty Little Girl", "Sweet Painted Lady" and "Roy Rogers". And four weak songs: "The Ballad Of Danny Bailey (1909–34)", "This Song Has No Title", "Grey Seal" (first released as a single in 1970) and "I've Seen That Movie Too".

1974 Caribou (10)

One timeless classic: "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". Seven fine songs: "The Bitch Is Back", "Solar Prestige A Gammon", "You're So Static", "Pinky", "Grimsby", "Dixie Lily" and "I've Seen The Saucers". Two disappointments: "Ticking" and "Stinker".

1975 Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy (9)

The most innovative phase of Elton John's career is essentially over at this point. However, this concept album, an autobiographical account of the early musical careers of Elton John (Captain Fantastic) and his long-term lyricist Bernie Taupin (the Brown Dirt Cowboy), has been an instant commercial success, reaching number 1 in its first week of release on the US Billboard 200. One timeless classic: "Someone Saved My Life Tonight". Two fine songs: "Better Off Dead" and "Gotta Get A Meal Ticket". Six disappointments: "We All Fall In Love Sometimes/Curtains", "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy", "Bitter Fingers", "Tower Of Babel", "Tell Me When The Whistle Blows" and "Writing".

1975 Rock Of The Westies (9)

One of Elton John's worst albums, but actually a huge commercial success (essentially still running on fumes from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"). One good song: "Island Girl". And eight disappointments: "I Feel Like A Bullet In The Gun Of Robert Ford", "Dan Dare Pilot Of The Future", "Yell Help/Wednesday Night/Ugly", "Grow Some Funk Of Your Own", "Hard Luck Story", "Street Kids", "Feed Me" and "Billy Bones And The White Bird".

1976 Blue Moves (18)

Elton John's career finally crashes in a spectacular fashion with this weak double album, that is not just an artistic fiasco (as was also the case with his two previous albums), but a commercial disappointment as well, finally ending a long streak of chart-topping albums for John that began with "Honky Château" in 1972. Only one excellent song: "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word". A disappointing track, "Your Starter For", written by Caleb Quaye. And 16 disappointing tracks written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin: "Tonight", "One Horse Town", "Chameleon", "Boogie Pilgrim", "Cage The Songbird", "Crazy Water", "Shoulder Holster", "Out Of The Blue", "Between Seventeen And Twenty", "The Wide Eyed And Laughing", "Someone's Final Song", "Where's The Shoorah", "If There's A God An Heaven What's He Waiting For", "Idol", "Theme From A Non-Existent TV Series" and "Bite Your Lip Get Up And Dance".

1978 A Single Man (11)

Nine fine songs written by Elton John and Gary Osborne: "Return To Paradise", "I Don't Care", "Big Dipper", "It Ain't Gonna Be Easy", "Part-Time Love", "Shine On Through", "Georgia", "Shooting Star" and "Madness". Two instrumental tracks written by Elton John alone: weak "Reverie" and fine "Song For Guy".

1979 Victim Of Love (6)

Six fine tracks cowritten by Pete Bellotte: "Victim Of Love", "Warm Love In A Cold World", "Born Bad", "Thunder In The Night", "Spotlight" and "Street Boogie". A weak cover song, "Johnny B. Goode".

1980 21 At 33 (9)

There are only three Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs on this album: "Two Rooms At The End Of The World", "Chasing The Crown" and "White Lady White Powder". They are all excellent. Three fine songs - "Little Jeannie", "Dear God" and "Take Me Back" - have been written by Elton John and Gary Osborne. Elton John and Tom Robinson have written two fine songs: "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" and "Sartorial Eloquence". Weak "Give Me The Love" has been written by Elton John and Judie Tzuke.

1981 The Fox (10)

There are four Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs on this album: "Just Like Belgium", "Heels Of The Wind", "Fascist Faces" and "The Fox". They are all excellent.  There are also three fine Elton John/Gary Osborne songs: "Breaking Down Barriers", "Heart In The Right Place" and "Chloe". Weak "Carla/Etude" has been written by Elton John alone. Elton John and Tom Robinson have written weak "Elton's Song". Memorable "Fanfare" has been written by Elton John and James Newton Howard.

Gary Osborne and Jean-Paul Dreau have written disappointing "Nobody Wins".

1982 Jump Up (10)

Half the songs on this album have been written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin: "Spiteful Child", "I Am Your Robot", "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?", "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)" and "All Quiet on the Western Front". The first three are fine. The last two are weak. Elton John and Gary Osborne have written four fine songs: "Dear John", "Blue Eyes", "Princess" and "Ball And Chain. Weak "Legal Boys" has been written by Elton John and Tim Rice.

1983 Too Low For Zero (10)

A terrific comeback album for Elton John and Bernie Taupin, their best in a decade. Two timeless classics: "I'M Still Standing" and "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues". Five excellent songs: "Kiss The Bride", "Crystal", "Whipping Boy", "Too Low For Zero" and "Religion". And only three disappointments: "One More Arrow", "Saint" and "Cold As Christmas In The Middle Of The Year".

1984 Breaking Hearts (10)

One timeless classic: "Sad Songs Say So Much". And nine weak tracks: "Passengers", "In Neon", "Who Wears These Shoes?", "Restless", "Breaking Hearts Ain't What It Used To Be", "Li'l 'Frigerator", "Slow Down Georgie She's Poison", "Burning Buildings" and "Did He Shoot Her".

1985 Ice On Fire (10)

One timeless classic: "Nikita".  Seven fine songs: "Tell Me What The Papers Say", "This Town", "Wrap Her Up", "Cry To Heaven", "Candy By The Pound", "Too Young" and "Soul Glove". And two disappointments: "Satellite" and "Shoot Down The Moon".

1986 Leather Jackets (9)

Nine songs on this album have been written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. All of them are quite weak: "Go It Alone", "Angeline", "Leather Jackets", "Hoop Of Fire", "Gypsy Heart", "Paris", "I Fall Apart", "Slow Rivers" and "Heartache All Over The World". It's one of Elton John's worst albums.

1988 Reg Strikes Back (10)

Arguably Elton John's best album of the 80's. Three timeless classics: "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That", "A Word In Spanish" and "Poor Cow". Three very good songs: "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Part Two", "Town Of Plenty" and "The Camera Never Lies". Four disappointments: "Since God Invented Girls", "Heavy Traffic", "Japanese Hands" and "Goodbye Marlon Brando".

1994 The Lion King (5)

Five superb songs written by Elton John and Tim Rice: "Circle Of Life", "Hakuna Matata", "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" and "Be Prepared".

1995 Made In England (11)

Two good songs: "Believe" and "Made in England". And nine weak ones: "House", "Cold", "Pain", "Belfast", "Latitude", "Please", "Man", "Lies" and "Blessed".

1997 The Big Picture (12)

Three good songs: "Something About The Way You Look Tonight", "Recover Your Soul" and "Love's Got A Lot To Answer For". Seven weak ones: "Wicked Dreams", "The Big Picture", "If The River Can Bend", "Long Way From Happiness", "The End Will Come", "January" and "I Can't Steer My Heart Clear Of You". The album also includes an excellent song released as a single in 1996, "Live Like Horses". There are two versions of that song; the one featuring Luciano Pavarotti is far superior. A very good song, "I Know Why I'M In Love", is included as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the album.

1999 Elton John And Tim Rice's Aida (15)

2021 Regimental Sgt Zippo (12)

Described as Elton John's "debut album that never was". It was recorded in late 1967 and early 1968. But in 1969 it was decided that "Empty Sky" would be released as John's debut album, and "Regimental Sgt Zippo" remained unreleased until 2021, when it finally became obvious just how wise was that original decision. One fine track: "When I Was Tealby Abbey". Nine weak songs: "Watching The Planes Go By", "Hourglass", "Tartan Coloured Lady", "Nina", "A Dandelion Dies In The Wind", "Regimental Sgt Zippo", "Angel Tree", "And The Clock Goes Round" and "Turn To Me".
