Elton John's first album. Quite uneven. Five fine songs: "Skyline Pigeon", "Val-Hala", "Gulliver / Hay Chewed / Reprise", "Hymn 2000" and "Lady What's Tomorrow". And four disappointing ones: "Western Ford Gateway", "The Scaffold", "Sails" and "Empty Sky". Later editions of the album include bonus tracks with four Elton John singles released in 1969: one fine tune ("Lady Samantha") and three weak ones ("All Across the Havens", "It's Me That You Need" and "Just Like Strange Rain").
1970 Elton John (12)
Two timeless classics: "Your Song" and "Border Song". Two excellent songs: "The Cage" and "Take Me To The Pilot". But five songs are weak: "I Need You To Turn To", "The King Must Die", "The Greatest Discovery", "First Episode At Hienton" and "Sixty Years On". Later editions of the album include bonus tracks with two Elton John singles released in 1970: fine "Rock And Roll Madonna" and weak "Bad Side Of The Moon".
